Probably because the damn hats are always covering up the top of his right ear, and making him look twelve.

It was mentioned in passing in an interview that Nick bit part of it off when they were kids - he was joking. Then I started looking at pictures and videos and noticed that the ear IS a different shape from the other, part of the top is missing.
