I need recs people!
I want to read real books and need ideas.
Not in the mood for nonfiction, I want magic or powers. Lasers and starfields.
So give me your recs. I crave expanding my library.
More than one, as I read ALOT and the odds of me having read something are pretty damn good.
And my single recs would be:
Sci Fi: James White's Sector General series, start with the two omnibus editions. Medical Sci Fi, first contact, mysteries, action and humor.
Fantasy: try to track down Eve Forward's Villains By Necessity. She takes the whole good vs. evil fight and turns it on it's head. The fight has happened and good won. Now the remaining bits of not-so-good have to save the world. thought provoking and funny.
Mystery: hmmm, I have to go with Amanda Cross' series of books. A touch dated but they're all based on literary mysteries. Fun.
Romance: yes, I read one romance novel years ago and found it interesting. House of Scorpio. No idea of the author or even the plot. I just remember it was zodiac based and had elements of mystery andfantasy mixed in.
Young Adult: hee. Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles series of books. Takes fairy tales and knocks em on their side.
Intermediate Readers: Mary Poppins. She was a bitch in the books.
Horror: Robert McCammon's Swan Song another end of the world apocalyptic novel. Big and engrossing.
Humor: Esther Friesner's Chicks series of fantasy compliations.
Historical: ancient would be Marion Zimmer Bradleys' Mists of Avalon, no contest. US would probably be 1000 White Women based on a true story when the government traded an Indian tribe women for land.
help!!

Date: 2003-03-26 06:31 pm (UTC)It's hard to describe, but it's JFK in purgatory writing his autobiography. So there are all of these famous people coming in and out...some in heaven, some in hell, some with him in purgatory. It's funny and tragic and insightful and just...I adore it. It's hard to find though.

Date: 2003-03-26 06:37 pm (UTC)My favorite authors (I can't pick just one) are easily Lackey & McCaffrey. I read everything Lackey puts her pen to. Except short stories, when I'm going to read a story I want a real, long, story. Lackey's new Elemental Masters series is good, as is her older series that follows a supernatural/magician investigator/policeman lady (I forget the name). And of course her Valdemar series.
Tamora(?) Pierce is also a good one - I haven't read a lot of her stuff lately (the library here in this town is truly pathetic, and my book budget only stretches so far). Her stuff tends to vary between the young adult & regular classifications.
Katherine Kurtz is also a favorite of mine. Her more recent Adept series I love, and her older Deryni series has been a long-time favorite.
And then there's David (& Leigh) Eddings - their series (of 10!) books is quite good. The 2nd set of 5 moves a bit slower than the first set, but they're still good.
My most recent discovery when looking for new reading material is a new author, Noel-Anne Brennan, the book is called "Sword Of The Land" & was quite enjoyable.

Well, Holy Fisting Crap. I AM Senile.
Date: 2003-03-29 11:45 am (UTC)No one is better at the fantasy, from Idle Days on the Yann to The Sword of Welleran to The King of Elfland's Daughter, 'far from the fields we know.' No one.
Further to Which...
Date: 2003-03-29 12:59 pm (UTC)And by the way, you are also never too old for E. Nesbit.
Re: Further to Which...
Date: 2003-03-29 09:17 pm (UTC)I'm pretty sure I've read Nesbit, most of the ones categorised as "kids" lit I've gone through.
Ah, the joys of working in a bookstore.
I call them Rita Hayworth attacks
Date: 2003-03-29 09:13 pm (UTC)Hmm, I am one with classic sci-fi, but I just realized I've never really read any classic fantasy.
Must fix that ASAP.
Dunsany, Bradley and Norton here I come.
