Harry Potter.
Book 5.
Fandom vs Canon.
Be careful ahead for spoilerific stuff
Things happen at the end. Two things. One bigtime huge the other just a few throwaway paragraphs. They are sure to rick fandom to the core. Pairings will be affected. It's interesting to see the reaction to this book in fandom. Personally, I thought it was an excellent book. Any book that can get me to read 870 pages in 6 and a half hours has to be damn good.
The small thing is annoying from a fandom perspective. But it can still be overcome. It makes the redemption that much sweeter. And more difficult. Actual archenemies and all that now with death as the goal.
The big thing is sad. But realistic, people die in war. I get the feeling it's only the first to come. Not to discount Cedric but this one actually places a start point to the war for the Wizarding World. Even if they never find out about the death. Which is extremely likely.
Other things (the het, eeewww) probably won't have that big an effect. James and lily hated each other in their fifth year yet they ended up married (and may I just say James was a bully. A schoolyard bully.) sothere is hope for any number of various het pairing to still happen.
And the madness for this book is amusing to me. We have had to tell people (through tonight, at least) that if you didn't reserve a copy ahead of time you lost out. Come back later in the week. I am truly dreading the release of the seventh book. The madness will be truly monumental.
Of towork I go Wish me luck we will probably run out today.

Date: 2003-06-22 09:28 am (UTC)And for the life of me, I don't understand this whole "we only ordered enough books to satisfy our pre-orders" policy. Is it a store choice, or did it come from the publisher's end, i.e. the supply was limited?

Date: 2003-06-22 07:11 pm (UTC)And Scholastic totally sucks, they made sure the Bigbox stores (Best Buy/WalMart/K Mart/etc) had enough copies. EIGHTY percent of the stock went to non-bookstores.

Date: 2003-06-22 07:14 pm (UTC)We hate Scholastic, they were also selling copies at the book fairs for cheaper than retail and making the customers pick them up at their local bookstores so we had to take into account these nebulous customers.
it wasn't that WE didn't order enough, Scholastic woudn't allocate them to Borders in enough quantities.

Date: 2003-06-22 07:19 pm (UTC)That's what I figured. In some way, it makes me feel better to know that the bottleneck was at the publisher level.
